The use of a PASS device (Personal Alert Safety System) has proven to be a potential lifesaving device throughout the fire and safety community. The PASS device will sound a loud audible signal if the wearer becomes immobilized or motionless for a 25 second time period.
This alarm may also be manually activated to call for help. The minimum specifications these devices must meet have been defined in the NFPA standard 1982, 1993 edition. Grace Industries, Inc., innovators and manufacturers of PASS and safety devices, has developed an important new SuperPASS alarm for the firefighter and others.
The demand for lighter, smaller and more reliable PASS devices is an ever-pressing issue for today's modern firefighter. The SuperPASS alarm fulfills these demands and features small size, lightweight and all electronic switching for enhanced reliability. SuperPASS incorporates a lack of motion alarm and a temperature alarm combined in a small, lightweight package. Because SuperPASS utilizes all electronic switching, the reliability of this PASS is greatly enhanced. There are no mechanical switches to malfunction.
The lack of motion alarm sounds a loud, easily recognized, yelping type signal if the wearer should become motionless. If the wearer is exposed to excess temperature, Super PASS will sound an easily recognized, rapid ringing tone. Typical response for the temperature alarm is:
| Environment Temperature | Alarm Response Time |
| 200 Degree F | 6 Minutes |
| 250 Degree F | 4 Minutes |
| 300 Degree F | 3 Minutes |
| 350 Degree F | 2.5 Minutes |
OPERATION:
To turn the unit on, simultaneously depress buttons located on sides of unit. This feature safeguards against accidental turn off. When activated, an acknowledgment click sound will be heard and SuperPASS will display a bright, flashing, wig-wag type display.
If the wearer should become motionless for a period of time that exceeds 18 seconds, a seven second pre-alert ticking sound will be heard. If no movement is detected, the SuperPASS will go into a loud alarm that can be heard one half mile or greater. This sound is easily recognized and provides an audio beacon that permits pinpointing the exact location of where the person is down. SuperPASS may also be manually activated to summon help.
